Cartographies of Violence and Imaginaries of Return

This workshop reflects on the question of how to rebuild in a context where violence dismantles the very idea of urban justice. For the past 3 years, Public Works has explored numerous action research methods to document the damages as a result of the Israeli aggressions on Lebanon — focusing on understanding pre-war spatial practices and non-tangible losses. We share these methodologies of reading places and representing them, and we highlight their role in not only deconstructing colonial narratives, but also in informing about return and reconstruction.

Instructors

Abir Saksouk: Abir graduated as an architect and did her masters in Urban Development Planning. She is the co-founder of Public Works Studio. Her primary focus includes urbanism and law, property and shared space, and the right to the city of marginalized communities.
Nadine Bekdache: Nadine is a practicing designer and urbanist, and co-founder of Public Works Studio. She researches socio-spatial phenomena through multidisciplinary methods; including mapping, imagery and film as both processes of investigation and representation.
